So this Easter we discovered a new idea of Egg'ing your neighbors! We bought plastic Easter eggs, printed off the 12 scriptures that highlight the Passion of our Lord and stuffed one into each egg along with a sweet treat. Then the discussion begins as to who will be egg'ed that evening. Each kiddo picked a house to egg and they were in charge of all the logistics for the rest of the family (someone keeps look out, someone hides eggs in the yard, someone drives ...or you can walk). This was a super fun tradition we started and will continue each year! Thanks to Facebook and Pinterest for introducing us to this idea!

I remember those famous words..."Habemus papam" one year ago today. I was watching "the" chimney with anticipation, sadness, hope, eagerness...all rolled into one. I sat in anticipation for a new shepherd to lead his flock. I was sad remembering the death of my beloved Blessed John Paul II and the departure of Pope Benedict. I was filled with hope that Benedict had made the correct decision and that the Holy Spirit is always wiser than one can begin to imagine. And I was eager to witness, again in my lifetime, the majesty of the conclave, the prayers of the cardinals, and the vigil watch. Thinking back now I also remember an immense amount of unity- the entire world was watching what was going to transpire in the election of a new pope...My Pope. John Paul II had always held that title "My Pope" because he was literally the only pope of my lifetime. I wept when he died, I was worried about the future of My Church, I had no idea what a conclave really meant, so many uncertainties. But now the entire world was united in prayer. Last year when they opened that curtain and Pope Francis stepped out...Wow! I just loved that smile. A soothing calm came over me as if my body realized that everything was going to be just fine. I think the internet exploded with google searches of who our Pope was. My mother called elated explaining that she had joined a prayer group to pray for all the cardinals at the conclave and the cardinal she had been asked to pray for was now the Pope...so now it was her Pope too! Having three kids in Catholic school, you can imagine the buzz on their campus as well. That evening was full of celebration and prayer of our new Pope and a sense of anticipation as to what the future held. Pope Francis~ you have amazed me everyday. Your Grace, dignity, beauty, and humbleness transcends my souls' desires for a shepherd and cleanses my anxiousness to move forward as a Catholic Christian. The Holy Spirit is amazing indeed...just look at you! The utter excitement of waiting for white smoke. It is an experience like no other. However, I found myself reflecting on the death of Pope John Paul II. I remember clearly, watching his room on TV as we knew his time to depart this world was coming soon. I waited for the light in his bedroom to be turned off. That was a signal to the world that he had passed. I cried in such agony. He was, after all, my Pope. The only Pope I remembered having ...and then he was gone. Such sadness and loneliness filled my heart and soul. I felt like a sheep with no shepherd, literally. It was an empty feeling. Such feelings came back as I watched Benedict depart the Vatican. I watched every moment in awe of the process and teared up as the door to the helicopter shut and took off. That was it. Then I took a deep breath. Shepherdless again, I found myself thankful to God that Benedict was here for us. I did not experience the feelings of grave sadness as with John Paul II, but the emptiness had returned. I waited eagerly each day as the Cardinals traveled to the Vatican. When word of the beginning of the conclave was announced, I was overjoyed to watch the Holy Spirit once again choose the successor to Peter. In all its majesty with the Litany of Saints, and prayers worldwide, the procession to the Sistine Chapel was a site to behold. And then the doors shut... My heart was pounding with excitement as the Lord was preparing the table of our new Pope. After only 5 votes...white smoke! Watching LIVE news coverage stream on my computer, waiting in anticipation of the announcement, and then the curtains opened! Habemus Papam! ("We Have a Pope!") is the announcement given in Latin by the Cardinal Protodeacon, the senior Cardinal Deacon, upon the election of a new Roman Catholic pope. The announcement was given from the central balcony of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican. After the announcement, the new pope was presented to the people and he gave his first Urbi et Orbi blessing. Again, in tears I watched in amazement as the world was introduced to Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Pope Francis. How grateful I am to be a witness to this process. How grateful I am to my faith for such a rich history and tradition. Onward we go Pope Francis...there are great things to be done. Forgiveness. It is a difficult concept to wrap your brain around. So I tried to approach it from a different angle. Forgiveness while being an action is also a grace. A grace that we can offer others because we are commanded too and we have all been granted that grace through Him. “I want mercy for myself (God please forgive me), but I want justice for others (they must be punished for what they did).” Or perhaps we will say (or think), “I can’t forgive that person until he says he’s sorry.” This is not the Gospel. Jesus’ disposition was to forgive all those who betrayed him, rejected him, and beat him. “Father forgive them for they know not what they do.” In fact, un-forgiveness is contrary to the message of the Gospel. “Judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who is not merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment” (James 2:13). The catch, if you will, with forgiveness is that we are only forgiven to the extent for which we forgive others. That is a tall order for most humans these days. I see angry people all around me. Angry about things that honestly seem trivial to me, and no I am not trying to trivialize someones trials However, I do think that as a whole our perspective or our pecking order of importance is largely skewed. And it is super difficult to take time out of your day and pray for those that "wrong us". And why? Because Jesus said so! Unconditional love is forgiveness and the only way to receive grace from Him. So while you are awaiting your prayers to be answered, start each day with forgiveness and grant it in your heart to others so that you will in turn receive His blessings. If we are unwilling to let go of our anger toward another or ourselves, it becomes our block to God's love; thus we do not witness prayers answered. Is abortion in the Constitution? How did the 5 justices arrive at this newly discovered “right” to choose? They said that there was an implied “right to privacy” in the constitution, and this means that abortion is now a newly discovered American right. There is no specified right to privacy in the Constitution, and there is no specified right to an abortion in the Constitution. So an implied right to privacy means it’s now OK to kill your baby in the womb. All of this crazy logic occurred less than 10 years after “the pill” was marketed openly in the US. The Pill, which keeps women from getting pregnant even if they have sex, separating the procreational aspects of sex from the pleasurable aspects of sex, something that God put together for a reason when he invented sex. And when the pill fails, which it does from time to time, the next alternative to escape responsibility for fornication or adultery morphed into the killing of the innocent baby. It seems that in every country where contraception became legal, abortion soon followed. Once sex became a sport instead of a way to sanctify one’s marriage, nothing would stand in the way of pleasure, even killing. Pope Paul VI warned all of us of this in 1968, with his Humane Vitae encyclical, but he was severely chastised for this, even from his own Canadian bishops, and many earthy priests. The Bible speaks in several places in regards to the sanctity of the womb. Psalm 139:13 says: "For thou didst form my inward parts, thou didst knit me together in my mother's womb." This verse explains that God is indeed creating humans in the womb, NOT just when we're born. In Jeremiah 1:5, God says: "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations." This verse shows that God has a plan for us even before he creates us in the womb. For man to thwart God's plan through the killing of His creation is an abomination. Similarly, God tells Isaiah that He formed him from the womb too: Isaiah 44:24: Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, who formed you from the womb: "I am the LORD, who made all things, who stretched out the heavens alone, who spread out the earth -- Who was with me? In Luke 1:43-44, Elizabeth, the cousin of Mary says: “And why is this granted to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For behold, when the voice of your greeting came to my ears, the babe in my womb leaped for joy." Notice that Elizabeth called Mary a mother, even though she hadn't given birth to Jesus yet (He was still a "fetus"), and that John the Baptist leaped for joy upon hearing Mary's voice, which is quite a feat for an unviable tissue mass. Deuteronomy 30:19: "I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse; therefore choose life, that you and your descendants may live". Amen Introduction It seems a debate can be raised between scripture and science on almost any topic. Inquiries between topics such as The Big Bang Theory and Creationism still go on today in classrooms around the world. The balance of science and religion is always in play when the belief is simply that; a belief. There are some things that we just believe such as the transubstantiation of the Eucharist during the Liturgy of the Eucharist at every Mass. We believe it is the blood and body of Christ that we are receiving and the Grace that comes with it. Upon examination of key passages in the Bible, one can see absolute elements of the process of inquiry we call the scientific method. Even though the scientific method is not documented as a specific type of inquiry until the 17th century, clearly the process is rooted with research methods and program design within Holy Scripture. Genesis Starting in Genesis, Adam and Noah both use classification and measurement in accordance with God’s commands. When Adam was searching for a partner (human like himself), God sent many creatures before him to be named. It was classification at its rawest form in that he categorized beasts, birds and cattle in the field. He used specific titles to describe each category to show their likeness. Noah used the concept of measurement in that God commanded the Ark be built with a specific amount of square footage. God specified how many rooms to build and using the concept of classification instructed exactly how to organize the creatures and that there must be two, one male and one female, of each creature. Exodus An early form of program evaluation can be found in Exodus in regards to Moses, by power of the Holy Spirit, rendering God’s judgment on people. In accordance with God’s command, Moses evaluated controversies amongst the people. Jethro evaluated the process by which people sought the guidance or judgment of Moses. Distinction was made as to what matters Moses can judge over. The more important command was for Moses to show and model the way to worship God and how to walk in the Light of the Lord. The evaluation of the way in which Moses was giving guidance was to spread the accountability of others of judgment in order to fulfill the commandment of God, so that all was peaceful. The people chosen by Moses to judge was to govern the lesser cases only and refer those of significant nature to him. Daniel In Daniel we find a significant source of scientific inquiry in that you read evidence of the thought process of inquiries and testing hypothesis. When Daniel and four others were brought before the King to be schooled and nourished as the King, conflict arose. Daniel believed and lived the Word of God and inquired to the servants to not be feed in a manner forbidden by law. The servant was quick to not want to honor this request in that visible signs would be seen by the King if not feed in according to his command. The scientific inquiry was: If the children were fed peas and beans and such and not forbidden meat along with water and not wine that God would grant mercy on them and not let the King see visible signs such as a leaner face or pale complexion. Daniel pleaded this experiment last for ten days to prove that they were truly in favor of the Lord. Daniel and the others were indeed in favor of the Lord as they had fatter faces than all of the children that ate the King’s meat and drank his wine. Daniel's proposed research was set up along what is known as the classical experimental design. According to current methodology, this design is composed of control and experimental groups, with each group being subject to a before-and-after test. Utilization of this design requires that subjects in both groups be treated exactly the same in every aspect except for one variable—in this case, the diet. Stated simply, both control and experimental groups were under identical conditions, except that the control group subjects consumed the king's meat and wine, while the experimental group had pulse and water. The purpose of the before-and-after test was to compare the subjects in the control group with the subjects in the experimental group to see if there was any change. Since other potential variables in the two groups were the same, any change could be attributed to the one variable-diet. |
